The Underwater Research Center of the Russian Geographical Society brings together people from different scientific fields – historians, archaeologists, divers, oceanographers and many others to conduct comprehensive underwater research using a complete range of tools and equipment. The purpose of the research is to study and preserve the natural, cultural and historic heritage.

Archangel Raphael
It is the fourth season that the team of the Underwater Research Center, RGS is conducting excavations on the Lubeck merchant ship Archangel Raphael which sank in 1724. It is one of the richest objects in the Baltic sea. This year we are going to continue our archaeological work.

Matua island-2017
The Underwater Research Center joined the expedition of the Defense ministry of Russia and RGS at Matua, Great Kuril ridge, the Okhotsk sea. This year’s goals and tasks are: to survey the island’s aquatic area, find underwater fortifications and explore the American and Japanese battle and cargo ships sunk during the World war II.
